Established in 1856, Whelans is a bar (public house), situated in a quiet, rural area of Ireland, north-south between Galway and Ennis, and east-west betwen The Burren and Lough Cultra. It is a rare and unique bar which has been home to many sessions of song music story and dance.
Nights in Shanaglish is a collection of Irish traditional music sessions in the West of Ireland. It was directed and produced by Vincey Keehan (who grew up closeby but now lives in San Francisco), and Paddy Egan (from Wicklow). NIS is an album collection which celebrates these sessions along with the history, folklore, and people who live in the local area.
The aim when recording the 16 CD and 9 vinyl sound files "live" in Whelans Bar, was to allow people to come and go in Whelan's as they would on a usual night down at Mikey Whelan's pub. Listen to the music from this collection by clicking this link. This contributed to a natural, "session" like atmosphere, where people could feel at ease. Vincey and Paddy wanted to capture the essence of what went on in Whelan's over many years of nights like these, experiencing great community spirit, with recitations and yarn stories, dancing, music and songs.
Included with the collection are audio tracks on CD, a Vinyl record (with digital downloads), a DVD documentary (focusing on interviews with the locals, history, landscapes). There is a "transcriptions booklet" of various songs and stories from the collection. All of these bring context to the atmosphere around the recording. A digipak and jewel case CD is also available.
